How long does it take to set up an SMSF?
Plan on four to six weeks before your fund can receive a rollover. The documents can be produced in days. What nobody can promise is the ATO issuing the fund's ABN: the standard is 28 days, and in practice we have seen it come back the same day and we have seen it take more than two months.

The timeline, step by step
Typical durations. Most of the waiting is other people.
| Step | Waiting on | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Every director obtains a Director ID, if they do not have one | You, via the ABRS | Do this first. Nothing below can start without it |
| A twenty-minute conversation, and your fixed fee | You and us | Booked within a few days, fee quoted the next business day |
| The corporate trustee company is registered with ASIC | ASIC, electronically | Same day |
| Paperwork prepared for execution | Your accountant | Within 2 business days, which is our commitment |
| Trustees sign the deed, declarations and minutes | You | 1 to 5 days, and this is the part you control |
| ABN, TFN and the election to be regulated are lodged | Your accountant | As soon as we have confirmation the documents are executed |
| The ATO processes the registration | The ATO | 28 days is the standard. We have seen same day, and we have seen 60 days and more |
| The fund appears on Super Fund Lookup | Follows the step above | Immediately after |
| The bank account is opened | Your bank | 2 to 10 business days |
| The investment strategy is prepared and signed | Your accountant, then you | 1 to 2 business days |
| Rollovers are requested and arrive | Your existing funds | About 3 business days each |
The first step really is the first step
A person must hold a Director ID before they can become a company director. Not afterwards, and not alongside. That means before the corporate trustee company can be registered, and therefore before the fund's documents can be drafted at all. If you do not already have one, apply the day you decide to go ahead: everything else in that table is waiting on it.
The ATO step is the one nobody warns you about
Most of that table is fast. One row is not, and it decides when your fund is actually usable.
The ATO reviews SMSF registrations before issuing an ABN. Until that is done, the fund does not appear on Super Fund Lookup, and while it is not on Super Fund Lookup your existing super fund will not release a rollover to it. Employers will not direct contributions to it either.
The ATO's standard is 28 days, but the range is wide. We have had registrations come back the same day, and we have had them take more than sixty. Nobody can promise you a number here, and any accountant who does is guessing.
What helps is knowing it is coming, so a long silence reads as the process working rather than as something having gone wrong. And that somebody is watching it who is not you: the risk in a six-week wait is not the six weeks, it is nobody noticing a fund has been sitting at forty days when it should have moved at twenty.
The parts that are ours are measured in days and we commit to them: your fee the next business day, the documents out for signing within two. We will try to beat that, and an urgent set-up is prioritised rather than queued. The rest of the table is ASIC, the ATO and your bank, and we would rather name their time as theirs than quietly absorb it into a number that makes us look faster.
What actually makes a set-up run late
Documents sitting unsigned. The signing step is the single biggest variable in the table and it is entirely yours. A fund where everything comes back in a day is usually a fortnight ahead of one where it takes a week.
Bank verification. Banks verify a new trustee structure independently and some are considerably slower than others. Worth starting as soon as the ABN is through.
Anything unusual in the structure. A member overseas, a company that already exists, a name that clashes with a registered business name. None of these are problems. They are questions, and a question asked on the first call costs nothing while the same question at registration costs a week.
What you can be doing while you wait
The four weeks at the ATO step are not dead time.
- Decide which of your existing funds you are rolling over, and check whether any of them hold insurance you would lose by closing them. That one is worth advice, and it is the kind we are not licensed to give.
- Get your identification documents together for the bank.
- Think about what the fund will actually hold, which is the conversation the investment strategy is built from.
- Settle the trustee structure. We only establish funds with a corporate trustee, and the reasons are set out here.
Where we stop
Everything above is general and factual: it describes a process, not your circumstances. Whether a self managed super fund suits you is a different question, it requires an Australian financial services licence to answer, and Cake SMSF does not hold one. If you are still deciding, a licensed financial adviser is the right next step. Once you have decided, setting the fund up is what we do.
Your fund should never be an afterthought.
